 ABOUT SCHOOL OF EARTH SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING

School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Nanjing University, is a polytechnic institute founded in January 2008 on the basis of the original Department of Earth Sciences. Now, it has three departments, Department of Earth Sciences, Department of Water Sciences and Department of Geological Engineering and Information Technology.

The school has 170 faculty members, including 6 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 68 professors, 43 associate professors, 39 lecturers, 5 Distinguished Professors in the Changjiang Scholars Program, 3 academic chair professors, 12 winners of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars and 1 with the title National Outstanding Teacher.

The School of Earth Sciences and Engineering is one of the oldest geology educational programs in China. It has nurtured a large number of outstanding geoscientists and has the largest number of graduates who are now academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the winners of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars among universities within China. The school tradition and characteristics in its history of over 90 years can be summarized as “patriotism and dedication, sincerity and unity, science and democracy, and realism and innovation.”

Each year, the school enrolls about 100 undergraduates, who major in geology, geochemistry, geophysics, hydrology and water resources, and geological engineering. It has two first-level doctoral-degree-conferring disciplines, geology and geological resources and engineering, eight second-level doctoral-degree-conferring disciplines, including the deposit mineralogy petrology, structural geology, geochemistry, paleontology and stratigraphy, hydrology and water resources, mineral prospecting and exploration, earth exploration and information technology, and geological engineering, and nine second-level master-degree-conferring disciplines. Each year, the school enrolls about 90 master’s students and 40 doctoral students. In addition, the school also has two post-doctoral station in geology and engineering geology.
